Description

This is arguably one of the most amazing hikes in South Africa. This is a safe, family-friendly hike with plenty of places to have a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacular views.

The trail begins at the Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse in Mossel Bay. On your way up, keep an eye out for what the locals call Dassies, a medium-sized terrestrial mammal native species that inhabits rock crevices. They are adorable creatures who are most active in the mornings and evenings.

From here, follow the trail for up to 8.3 miles (around 3-6 hours) to Dana Bay -- Note: you will want a shuttle car at Dana Bay or can turn around and hike back the way you came at any point. Along the way, you will experience stunning views of the Indian Ocean from 30 meter cliffs covered in vibrant, orange rock and greenery.

Be sure to pack plenty of water, as there are no refill stations along the trail. Generally, 1 liter of water is recommended for every 2 hours of hiking. Additionally, be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat as there is little to no shade along the route. Finally, wear good hiking shoes or boots. The trail is well-marked and well-paved, however, there are still plenty of rocky surfaces and areas close to water, so good tread is a must. Parking is available at both locations.

Have fun, be safe and happy trails!
