Beautiful hike along the Resurrection Bay. Stunning views of ocean and mountains.

Follow the signs south of Seward to Lowell Point. This is the trailhead. The first mile of the trail is about a mile long. You descend a well-maintained trail from the trailhead about 500 feet to the coast. Many people just hike this portion for a short trip to enjoy the beach.

Once you reach the beach, take a right. Walk along the coast for about 3 more miles. Terrain varies from sand to boulders to a few small sections of rock outcrop.

MAKE SURE YOU TIME THIS AT LOW TIDE. It is recommended you start 2 hours before low tide to have maximum time to cross. That said, we started late and were able to make it comfortably. Info here http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/maps/cainesheadtrail.pdf.

The cabin is somewhat hidden about 100 yards off the coast. There is another cabin and several camp sites further up the coast. Cabins are by reservation only. http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/cabins/derbycovefs.pdf

The cabins are equipped with wood stoves. We found wood already chopped and were able to start a fire right away. We chopped more wood to leave for the next guests. There are also pots and pans in the cabin for cooking on the wood stove.

This hike is family friendly. We ran into a family with a few kids, the youngest of which was probably around 5.

This hike can be done year round. Watch for storms and the storm surge with the tides, especially in the winter. We were able to do this in the winter; it has been an unusually mild winter.

Seward, Alaska is known for being rainy. Come prepared with your hardshell.
