At the end of a steep and rocky climb above Refugio Hielo Azul sits the very blue ice for which the refuge is named.
This steep, but not so long hike begins at Refugio Hielo Azul. The view of the lake at the base of the glacier is hidden from the refuge but the path to it is clearly seen.
Be sure to register your name with whoever is working in the refuge before you begin to hike. The staff can also provide extra directions, a map, and tips.
The 3-4 hour roundtrip path begins at the soccer field next to the refuge. Follow the path next to the closest goal net towards the rocky slope. The trees disappear quickly and you will be left to follow the red and yellow circles (and flags) painted on the rocks. The path is very steep and full of loose rocks.
The lake and glacier only become visible at the very last turn. The icy blue of the lake in conjunction with the brisk wind will surely take your breath away.
