Thor's Head, Asgard Swamp.

This track starts with a dirt road turn off of the Great Western Highway onto Victoria Falls Road, note: you will need a four wheel drive or capable car, nothing small. There is a beautiful lookout at the end of this road, but you want to pull over at the sign that says "Thor's Head, Asgard Swamp". Don't you just love the name? I must admit it was the name that grabbed me when I was searching for a new adventure!!

The first 2/3 of the track is quite open and in full sun, so make sure you have a hat and lots of water. Downhill, through the swamp and a creek (mud) crossing. Continue to an area between two rock outcrops, the larger one on the right. 2km in and there is a small cleared area for camping, with one or two fire spots.

NB: The second half of this track is NOT signposted and is NOT a managed trail.

After another half km, follow a light trail that is a turn off on the left of the managed trail. It will lead you towards an open field (pictured). Follow the path until it leads you back into the bush, make sure you carefully watch where you are going as it is unmarked, however a lot of people have walked it and there will be a visible track. It is uphill and will lead you to the very edge of an unfenced cliff. Follow the cliff line around to the left and keep going uphill. It will open out to a wide ledge (pictured). If you want to keep going, keep to the left end of the ledge and climb!! The top will reward you!

Thor Head is a small monolith of rock separated from the mountain side. Climb to the top and you have 360 degree uninterrupted views of the Blue Mountains near Mount Victoria. Enjoy the view, a good snack and a relax, then turn around and walk back the way you came! Now you can say you've been to Asgard.

The last part of the walk follows a large unfenced cliff line and there is no track for the last 1km. This walk passes through very remote areas and sections that have no visible track (my partner and I couldn't find the way the first time we went). At least one person in your group should have training and experience in off track walking and navigation - or a serious bout of common sense! Please make sure you take a GPS or a map, or grab a Beacon from the local police station for free.
