Great walk and overnight stay at a beautiful Hut (fifteenth highest in the ACT)

Drive south out of Canberra on Tharwa Drive, over the Tharwa bridge on to Naas Road. Follow Naas Road for 11km and then turn left onto Top Naas Road. Travel a further 4km on dirt to the Top Naas Homestead driveway.

Starting in the valley (640m) at the Top Naas Homestead driveway, we walked up and out the back of the property into the Namadgi National Park. Firetrail leads to the top of the ridge with the first 4km being pretty hard going with an elevation gain of 400m. Once up and over the top of the ridge the trail becomes less obvious. We opted to follow Half Moon Creek along the wombat trails until it rejoined the light 4WD track. Jumped the gate into the National Park at around the 9km mark, up a small rise and over a saddle. Down the other side and turned left at an obvious junction to join the Brandy Flat firetrail. 3km further and you'll round the bend to see Brandy Flat Hut across the clearing.

The following day we walked back out via the Gudgenby Creek firetrail. An easy walk back, all downhill at a steady rate with beautiful views into the valley where the trail meets back up with Top Naas Road for collection.

The hut has a rain water tank, though if there's been no rain there'll be no water. There's also an outback toilet 20m or so from the hut, a throne with a view!

There are a few different ways to get to Brandy Flat Hut. I think this walk is particularly nice, compared to the fire trails on the western side of the range.
