Explore Granite Gorge Nature Park

Paddys Green, Queensland

Description

Added by Madison Sankovitz

This is a hidden spot in the Tablelands of Queensland that offers walks and swimming throughout a landscape of granite boulders along with the opportunity to see and interact with wildlife such as rock wallabies.

Truly experience Australia's Northern Savannah wilderness at this nature park. Granite Gorge offers options for staying overnight, such as camping or renting a cabin (visit their website at granite gorge.com.au), but you can experience the park extensively during a day trip.

Follow markers to walk through the boulder gorge. There are different options for length and difficulty of walk, so you can find one that suits your skill and comfort level. These walks won't talk longer than a couple hours.

Get up close to Mareeba rock wallabies, which live solely in this area. The visitor center has macropod pellets for sale that you can feed to them. The wallabies are used to being around people and will come right up to you and feed out of your hand! In addition, possums, 5 types of gliders, frilled necked and other lizards, 2 types of quolls, turtles and echidnas inhabit the park. It is also an excellent spot for birdwatching, as about 200 species of birds have been seen in the park.

A stream and several swimming holes provide excellent places to cool off after walking through the gorge or while enjoying a picnic. These are within easy walking distance from the parking lot.
