Tucked away in the beautiful Marin County just north of San Francisco lies a hidden gem called Cascade Falls.

This magical waterfall is accessed by the moderately challenging High Water Trail, which winds through lush forests and crosses over scenic creeks as it gradually climbs up to the base of the falls.

The hike starts in a shady canyon filled with ferns before opening up into sunny meadows blanketed in golden wildflowers in the springtime. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers and chickadees as you pass through alternating groves of oak and bay trees. After about a mile, you’ll glimpse the first view of Cascade Falls plunging down a rocky cliff-side in the distance.

The last half mile to the falls gets steep in parts as you climb up the canyon. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Once at the base of the 100-foot waterfall, it's worth scrambling up the boulders to view the cascade from above as the water thunders into a clear pool below. Dip your feet into the refreshing water before heading back down the trail. On hot days, you’ll welcome the shade as the path winds back through oak and redwood groves until you’re back at the parking area.

If you’re looking for more stunning Marin County waterfall hikes near San Francisco, be sure to check out the magnificent Cataract Falls hike as well. It's one of the tallest waterfalls in the region at over 300 feet tall.

To get to the High Water trailhead, take Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Fairfax and turn onto Pacheco Avenue. Drive for 2 miles until you see the parking area on your left. The hike to Cascade Falls is open year-round but ideal in spring when the falls are flowing heavily from winter rains. Bring plenty of water as none is available along the trail. Be sure to stay on marked paths as the cliff edges are unstable in areas.
