Tucked away along the coast north of San Francisco, the McCurdy, Bolinas Ridge, Randall, Olema Valley, Bolema, Ridge Trail Loop offers stunning ocean views and a peaceful hike through seaside meadows and forests. This moderate 5-6 hour hike loops across the Bolinas Ridge, with panoramic vistas overlooking the Pacific and the town of Bolinas. The trail starts in a shady redwood grove, then climbs up through golden grasslands speckled with wildflowers like blue-eyed grass and Indian paintbrush. Look out for cypress trees twisted by the ocean winds, and keep an eye out for raptors circling overhead. The single track trail snakes along the ridge crest, then descends back into the woods through fern-filled gullies. Stop for a snack overlooking the steep cliffs of the Bolinas coast - you might even spot a whale during migration season! The hike finishes with a pleasant walk along Olema Creek as it winds through the valley back to the trailhead. Be sure to visit Cataract Falls afterwards to see the tallest waterfall in Marin County.
To get to the trailhead, take Highway 1 north from Stinson Beach and turn left on Mesa Road. Follow Mesa Road for 2.5 miles until you reach the parking area and trail start. Some helpful tips for this hike: bring plenty of water since there are no sources along the ridge, wear good footwear as the trail can be rocky and slippery, and check tide tables if you plan to visit the Bolinas coast - some sections are impassable at high tide. Popular questions about the hike include:
- How long does it take to complete the full loop? 5-6 hours total.
- Is it dog friendly? Yes, dogs are allowed on leash.
- Is there cell phone reception on the trail? No, expect limited to no service on the ridge.
- Can I mountain bike on the trail? No, it's foot traffic only.
- What is the total elevation gain? Approximately 1,800 feet.
With its peaceful forests, wildflower meadows, and breathtaking Pacific views, the Bolinas Ridge loop makes for an unforgettable Marin County adventure. Just be sure to prepare for changing weather and bring plenty of water when tackling this scenic coastal hike.
