The Mueller Tunnel hike via Loma Alta Trailhead in Altadena, California, is a moderately challenging trail that spans approximately 15.64 miles round trip. The trail features a steady incline, with an elevation gain of about 4,938 feet, making it suitable for intermediate hikers. The trail is well-marked and maintained, with clear signage at key junctions. The trail offers a variety of natural features, including a mix of chaparral and oak woodland. The highlight of the hike is the Mueller Tunnel, a 275-foot long tunnel carved through solid granite in the 1940s. The tunnel provides a unique feature to this trail, offering a cool respite from the sun before the final ascent to the summit. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the San Gabriel Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. On clear days, the Pacific Ocean is visible in the distance. The trail is open year-round, but the best time to hike is in the cooler months of fall and spring. Hikers are advised to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for variable weather conditions.
