One of the best trails is Angkor Archaeological Park. This loop hike follows the top of the Angkor Thom outer wall. Along the way, the trail will pass all five gates to Angkor Thom as well as four seldom visited small Prasats.

You can start this hike from any of the five gates.  However, the easiest starting point is the south gate because it is typically the first gate you encounter when entering Angkor Thom.  Have your tuk tuk driver drop you off and wait for you at the gate.  While the trail is very easy, it is long and allow for time to check out the gates and the corner Prasats.

I hiked this is a clockwise direction but you can start in either direction.  If you choose clockwise, ascend to the right when facing the gate from inside Angkor Thom.  Once on the wall, it is very pleasant hike to the first corner, southwest.  Around the corner, continue hiking until you reach the West Gate.  The west gate is unique from the other because there is still only a dirt road passing through it.  You have to descend to the road, cross and back up onto the wall.  Continue north to the next corner, northwest.

Around the corner, the next gate you approach is the North Gate.  Again, descend the wall to cross the road and back up onto the wall to the next corner, northeast.  Around the corner and the next gate is the Victory Gate.  This is one of the more popular gates so by the time you arrive, there will be a lot of people.  You will soon leave the crowd after ascending back on the wall and continue a short distance to East Gate, also known as Gate of the Dead.  This gate has no people visiting for the most part because the road through it ends shortly in the jungle.

Back up on the wall traveling south, round the the last corner, southeast.  Follow back to the South Gate where hopefully your tuk tuk driver is waiting.

Most of the way you have views of the Angkor Thom moat and east of the four corners has a small Prasat temple.  This is a great trail to escape the crowds and heat because most of the trail is in the shade.
