Description

Hike in a treeless, tundra landscape among jagged moss covered mountains and enjoy 360 degree views.

As a whole, Tombstone Territorial Park boasts a stunning and at times alien landscape but, the Rake Mountain area is particularly beautiful.

Park you vehicle at the turn off near kilometer 90 (there is a sign) of the Dempster Highway. Orient yourself northwest towards the small saddle in Rake Mountain and start hiking! I would suggest talking with park staff at the information center first as they would be very helpful in showing you Rake Mountain on a map beforehand and prevent any confusion once your at the parking area.

The first kilometer or so is through flat treeless bog type vegetation. The real workout begins when you reach the base of the mountain and begin the 2 km accent. At the top of this climb you will find yourself in a crater-like indent surrounded by various peaks and ridges in which you can explore. The crater area itself can be quite windy, but it should be possible to find an area near a rock face in which to pitch your tent if you plan on staying the night. From here you can hike back the way you came or forge your own route.

Backcountry camping is free in Tombstone unless you use one of the designated backcountry sites on designated trails. However, you will need to put a down payment on a bear canister to store your food and you will get reimbursed when you return the canister. These canisters can be obtained at the information center near the entrance to the park.

There is not any particular trail to follow for this hike but it is impossible to get lost as your view is never obstructed by trees. That being said, make sure you take effort to lessen your impacts on the landscape by leaving no trace and through avoidance of trampling on flowers.

Additionally, if you are lucky enough to be visiting in the summer you may be able to experience the midnight sun!

Backpack Rake Mountain Reviews

Gorgeous hike. Starts out at a small gravel pit. It's really Micky at the start of the hike, but once you get to the mounds at the base, it's gets a lot more dry if you keep right!
