From the Berg Lake Campground you can explore the area around the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies. You will see glaciers, ice fields, icebergs and wildlife.

This epic day hike to Reef Icefield can be done if you are staying at the Berg Lake Campground. Berg Lake is accessible from the Berg Lake Trailhead just off of Canada Highway 16. Permits to stay at Berg Lake can be purchased at the Visitor Centre near the trailhead.

Snowbird Pass is located 7 miles up a glacially carved valley that spills into Berg Lake. The trail follows the Robson River for a short while before turning east up into the valley carved out by the Robson Glacier. This valley has a medium sized lake where one can see icebergs floating about. Along the way, signs mark the extent to which the glacier has receded.

After passing through the valley, the trail starts to climb the eastern moraine of the glacier and the trail sometimes turns into following cairns across boulder fields. The trail then exits the valley into a beautiful alpine meadow. From here, you can see Snowbird Pass. Be sure to look behind you as you ascend the meadow for incredible views of Mount Robson.

The trail then takes a few switchbacks up to the pass, where you are rewarded with views of the almost endless expanse of ice that is the Reef Icefield. There is no way to loop this trail, so when you have had your fill of ice, head back down to the Berg Lake Campground.
