About this place

Added by The Mountain Bed .com

Nestled on the Juan de Fuca trail 2 hours west of Victoria (16km/10mi south of Port Renfrew), Sombrio Beach is popular hangout during any season. A great camping spot in the summer and a stellar surf spot in winter, Sombrio is a must-see for its tall trees, big waves, and hidden treasures.

Heading west from Victoria, take the TransCanada Highway to Hwy 14. Continue past Sooke towards Port Renfrew. Look for the sign that reads Sombrio Beach Trailhead (approximately 45 minutes past Sooke) and take the left. Note that this dirt road can be incredibly rugged (aka full of potholes) and steep, but it’s worth the effort if your vehicle (and nerves) can handle it!

From the parking lot, it’s an easy 10-minute walk on the well-maintained trail. The path slowly tapers into a fork leading to either East or West Sombrio Beach. (Don’t worry, you can’t really make a wrong turn, as both trails are about 500m and lead to a stunning beach). These two designated camping areas will guide you toward cool rocks and, of course, the calming crash of ocean waves. If you’re up for exploring rocks, waterfalls, and a cave or two, opt for the left fork and take a much-deserved long walk on the beach (~20 minutes) to a small stream. Walk upstream to find beautiful moss-covered stone walls and a nearby waterfall.

If surfing is on your radar, don’t forget to bring a full wetsuit (complete with hood, gloves, and booties). This beach has world-class surfing during the winter, but you best believe you’ll want to be well-equipped.

CAMPING:
Camping is first come, first served basis. There is a cash fee, which you deposit at the trailhead.
