Description

Added by Anson Tangen

Explore this northern Alberta Badlands area, that ranges along the prairie grasslands. The area hosts amazing locations to watch and photograph the northern lights with little to no light pollution, a great place to camp with many trails to hike.

Directions: From Grande Prairie, travel East on Highway 43 (towards Edmonton) for about 20 kilometers, then turn left on Range Road 41 and drive north for 3 kilometers. Finally take another left hand turn on Township Road 724 and continue on that road until you reach the Kleskun Hills campground.

Once at the campground, there is a playground and several picnic areas, along with an old pioneer town. The hills can be accessed from anywhere in the park, and all have designated hiking trails. With each hill hosts a great view of the prairies where you can see for hundreds of kilometers (in clear conditions). Along the trails there are over 150 types of wildflowers along with some cacti. On the far West end of the area is a First Nations Burial Ground where the Cree and Beaver people once buried their dead. The first area with the stand-alone hills is where most people only explore, but going across the bridge on the Eastern side of the park will allow you access to a massive part of the park that remains un-scathed.

For camping, rates are $25.00 per night (per campsite) and group day use rates are $60.00, *there are a total of nine campsites. A typical camping season usually ranges from somewhere around May 15 to October 15. There are restrooms with showers, and potable water available from the tap. Firewood is also free.

*Campsites are un-serviced.

Camp in the Kleskun Hills Reviews

Only 15 minutes from Grande Prairie to this unique terrain for this part of the province. It is a nice change from the regular forested camp sites in the area.

Short drive out there. Wasn’t a long hike but good way to get the blood pumping! Nice taste of the badlands especially if you’ve never been south to the badlands.
