This hike features scenic alpine lakes, glacial fed waterfalls, wildlife, and 360 degree summit views of the town of Banff, Bow River Valley, Sunshine Village and Mount Assiniboine.
Taking Hwy 1 West of Banff for approximately 8 miles you'll come to the Bourgeau Lake Trailhead. This trail starts with a 4.5 mile, 2460ft elevation through the forest to the beautiful Bourgeau Lake. This glacial tarn signals the start of the alpine and a wonderful morning hike on it's own.
From here follow the trail up the small scree slope and enjoy the view (and most likely mountain goats) 1.5 miles past other small lakes to the col with the summit of Mount Bourgeau to the east and a view of the beautiful Mount Assiniboine to the south. The final 1 mile is a 1450ft slog up the west ridge to the summit. This classic of the Canadian rockies offers up a beautiful 360 degree view - well worth the climb!
