Alder Flats is one of many beautiful trails winding through Golden Ears Park. This is a harder hike, and a high elevation gain but the views are incredibly worth the adventure.

If you're looking for a challenge and hope to get into the mountains this is a great adventure to set out on.

Be prepared:
Water, a lot of time, and with an understanding of the elevation gain will be important. This hike to the viewpoint of Alder Flats (overlooking the ears) takes around 2 hours to reach the lookout and 2 hours to get back to the parking lot. You go through a lot of waterfall run off spots and can run into some snow depending on the time of year. The terrain offers a lot of loose rocks and toe catching roots so be cautious about the shoe choice before going.

As Vancouver weather is temperamental, be prepared for higher winds and rain. The weather can change quite fast within the higher spots. This trail is maintained very well, with new signs, nicely groomed trails and trail markers however its easy to get lost if not paying close attention. The parking lot fills up very quickly so be sure to get there early and get on the trail around 7:00 -9:00 am.

What a view:
You'll reach the first stunning viewpoint of Alouette Mountain, Blanshard Needle, Edge Peak, and Golden Ears, this is where you can decide to stop, take photos and watch the fog roll through the peaks before turning back, or you can continue on the West Canyon trail for another 12 miles. Theres plenty more to see but typically campers or very active hikers venture up there. The overall elevation gain to the warming hut is about 1500m from the parking lot..

Overall this is an amazing area that allows for some of those views you'd get in Squamish. The challenging hike is something to be aware of but its very rewarding!
