Description

Abraham Lake is known for it's deep turquoise hue, and seeing it from above brings the scenery to a whole other level.

The trail is steep from the very beginning, which offers rewarding views from the get go. There is moderate scrambling throughout the hike up, which requires the use of hands and some minor route finding at times. Once you reach the top of Windy Point Ridge, you can continue on northeast towards "The Buckle" (just follow the well defined path) which will add about 2 more hours on to your day but brings you to some more amazing views down Abraham Lake and on to the Rocky Mountains.

The hike takes about half a day if you are simply going to the top of Windy Point Ridge, however, if you decide to go to the Buckle allow about 8 hours for the day.

Getting there: The trailhead for Windy Point Ridge is located 22km south west of Nordegg, right before the road cuts through a huge slab of rock.

Hike Windy Point Ridge Reviews

The route provides fun exposure in some areas, especially if you choose to scramble up the back of the Buckle - there is a log book at the summit of the Buckle inside a pink water bottle in the middle of the largest cairn.

I was able to do this hike a couple weekends ago. It's a steep one, but totally worth the effort. Amazing views of Abraham Lake.

Just did this hike (in February) and it was amazing! Definitely a steep one but the view is incredible the whole way, and it was very easy to follow. Took us about an hour and a half to get to the top of windy point ridge. An awesome hike if don't have a lot of time or even if you do, opt to have a little picnic at the top!
