Kayak the Sechelt Inlet
Sechelt, British Columbia
Description
Added by Eleanor Isdale
The Sechelt inlet offers a quiet, a rugged coastline perfect for a day trip or multi-day kayak trip. It's a short paddle to free campsites along the eastern shore. For a day trip, it's easily reachable from Vancouver.
The Sechelt Inlet provides the perfect place for an afternoon adventure or multi-day kayak trip. Kayaks and canoes can be rented from a number of outfitters in the Sechelt area, and many allow multi-day rentals for those keen paddlers.
A great place to set off is from Porpoise Bay Provincial Park, where sandy beaches allow for smooth sailing and docking. Many of the rental companies can deliver to your launch point if you can't transport a kayak yourself.
Kayak north at a leisurely pace and within 3 hours of coastal discovery you'll reach the well-known 'Aquarium', a small island near the town Tuwanek and just past the recognisable Tuwanek Hotel. Here you can find a wide array of sealife - starfish, crabs, anemones and all kinds of fish. Check back behind you and you might spot a curious seal who has been following your kayak for quite a while!
If you're ready to rest, keep kayaking north around the point and you'll reach Tuwanek Beach campsite. This is a free campsite, first in first served. The sandy beach will invite you very quickly into the fresh waters for a relaxing swim. If you're camping, pitch your tent and fill up your water for purification in the nearby stream. The sites do not have potable water but there is an outhouse available.
If you're ready to keep on going for your day or multi-day trip, continue north after your lunch break and head up to Oyster Beach campsite for your next night or rest break. Nine Mile Point is the next site further up north for the more adventurous kayakers to discover. All can be accessed from Porpoise Bay within a day of quick paddling.
