Awesome mountain biking trail in Jasper, Alberta full of short, steep climbs and awesome, rocky downhill sections. Beautiful views the whole way.

Getting there:

The Overlander trailhead is a little outside the town of Jasper, to the Northeast (fuel-up at the local Tim Horton's right before hand). Either bring your own Mountain Bike and park by the train station, or rent a bike in town (I'd highly recommend Vicious Cycles; they only charge like 32 USD for a whole day, and the bikes are solid). They also give you a trail map, so even if you're not renting from them, dip in and grab one. To get to the Overland trailhead,  e took Trail 7 from town, and this led us right there - super easy.

The Trail:

The trail itself is a single-track trail that runs about 16 km. There are plenty places to hop on the trail (close to the Fairmount, the Wapiti campground, etc.), but the actual trailhead is marked on the map. The trail follows the river, and runs North of Jasper through the forest with several sections opening up to views of lakes and meadows . A few things to know about the trail:

  • If it's just rained, be really careful, the trail is super muddy and will be an absolute mess. If you're down to get grimy, go nuts.
  • The trail is listed as intermediate/advanced because of a few technical sections. If it's your first time mountain biking, they're do-able, just make sure you go with someone who has experience so they can coach you down them.

About halfway through the trail, at about the 6km marker, you'll hit an open field/meadow. This is an awesome place to take a lunch break/has some pretty interesting history about a settlement that burned down there. The trail is filled with some short, steep uphills, but you're definitely rewarded with some awesome bridges and cool, rocky downhill sections. We saw some moose/deer during our ride, so keep your eyes peeled. Would highly recommend this adventure.

This is bear country, so prepare accordingly.
