Explore Takakkaw Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in all of Canada, plunging over the jagged cliffs of the Rockies at almost 400 meters!

This powerful waterfall is unquestionably, one of Canada's largest and most magnificent waterfalls. It falls at around a whopping 381 meters over the sheer cliff of the beautiful Canadian Rockies. The word 'Takakkaw' loosely translates from the language of 'Cree,' into the English phrase, "it is magnificent." As for camera angles, this waterfall can be seem from miles away, and are best viewed, (for a greater understanding of force and power) up close.

*The rocks can get very slippery due to the mist, so watch your footing.

The Trail: From the parking lot, find the Iceline Trail, it is a wide trail that is the guidance point to the falls. Continue along this trail for about 250 meters and branch off left across a bridge (there are also bathrooms along the way). After you cross the bridge, continue on for however long you want. Going up as close as you possibly can to the falls (without rock climbing) is about a 700 meter hike from the bridge. This adventure is very easy and fun for people of all fitness levels and ages!

*This is a major tourist attraction so parking may not be very easy.

Directions: From Banff, head northwest on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) for about 80 kilometers (55 minutes), passing Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway. There will be a right hand(north) turn at the 80th kilometer. This road will lead you passed several campgrounds and viewpoints and challenge your vehicle with a few switchbacks. This road winds on for 16 kilometers, and comes to an end in a parking lot devoted to the stunning Takakkaw Falls.

Takakkaw Falls Reviews

Amazing, 2nd tallest waterfall in the country. Paved and easy the whole way. Relatively short hike. If you plan to get close to the falls, bring a shell, sweater or jacket to change into after!
