Winding along side the Fraser Canyon, through foggy mountain peeks, along breathtaking views of evergreen-covered cliff sides with glimpses of the Fraser River below, this provincial park and the surrounding landscapes are a beautiful piece of history. The Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park provides a great rest stop for the long trans-canada highway in addition to picnic facilities for travelers. Also, because of its location in a narrow portion of the river, it is a great place for fishing as it is the largest fish producing water course in the province.

The Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park is 136 acres dedicated to the original Cariboo Wagon Road Bridge over the Fraser River. It was originally established in 1984 and until the first European visit by Simon Fraser, remained inhabited by First Nations. The bridge was constructed in 1861 shortly after the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush and was named after Princess Alexandra of Wales. It was later rebuilt numerous times until the final construction in 1926 which is what stands today. It was ceased to be used by automobile traffic in 1964, however one can note the pathway being just wide enough for a vehicle. The bridge is accessible through a small trail off the parking lot on the east side of the Fraser River and is the old portion of the Cariboo Highway.

Looking just a few meters down river you can see the currently in-use Alexandra Bridge (2nd photograph).

Additional attractions in the area include Hell's Gate (an Airtram suspended over the Fraser River), the small but quaint town of Hope, Kawkawa Lake Resort & Campground, & the ever popular & beautiful Harrison Lake — home to the Harrison Hot Springs.

This bridge is pretty neat with lots of history to go with it. Originally built in the 1800s then dismantled and then a new one out in the early 1900s it has been there for a while. The hike is all down hill to it and then to get back it is uphill. I'd say a total walking distance of 2km. Check out the Alexandra bridge provincial park site for more details on the history.

The journey to and from this place was in and of itself a great adventure. Well worth the drive through the mountains & a beautifully scenic place. Absolutely a magical and transcendent experience in the back country of North West Canada.
