View a small, but loud waterfall in Beaver Falls, all while relaxing on big shale rocks just off of Yellowsead Highway.

The hike is relatively flat, short, and goes along the Holmes River to Beaver Falls. What the waterfall lacks in height it makes up for in sheer volume and sound.

Along the way to the waterfall you walk through a lush green forest with lots of bunchberry bushes and other assorted wild flowers. Everywhere you turn during late spring you can see butterflies in the forest.

It's hard to tell how big the falls will be--it depends on the time of year. If you go during the spring run-off there's a slight waterfall and then huge rapids right after it. If you are an experienced whitewater rafter then this would be a neat place to check out. If you visit between August and September you can see the Salmon run up the river to lay their eggs.

In the centre of the river just after the falls there is a huge shale rock formation which makes the waterfall pretty unique. The waterfall and rapids are very loud but mesmerizing, just like most moving water is.

Be warned though, the mosquitoes are pretty bad year round since the Robson Valley is a wetter climate than normal. I would recommend wearing pants and/or a long sleeve shirt and lots of bug spray.

CautionBe very careful as there are no guard rails along the edge of the river or at the waterfall. The rocks at the waterfall can get very slippery.

Directions: From Prince George BC travel East towards McBride BC. Once in McBride travel approximately 11km (6.8mi) east of McBride to the Holmes (Beaver) River. The parking lot to the Beaver Falls Trail is a small gravel area to the left just before you cross the bridge. Once there you will see the trail right beside the river.

Google map directions from Prince George BC can be found here.

Beaver Falls Reviews

Nice short 2km round trip hike. The trail head is easily accessible right by the highway just out of mcbride, worth checking out if you’re in the area. We loved the shale rocks, super pretty.

If you are in the McBride area this is a place you should at least stop at once because it is pretty cool. The shale rock formations the pretty green forest you walk through and the thunderous short waterfall make it worth the easy 2km walk... but seriously... wear tons of bug spray!
