Climbing at Grassi Lakes

Canmore, Alberta

Description

Added by Matt Ford

A great climbing area located close to Canmore. Perfect if you don't have the time to drive further or make the long approach to the more secluded crags. Distance: 300 metres. Elevation gain: 100 metres. Duration: 1 day.

From the parking lot walk about 350 meters back towards Canmore. At this point you will go down the hill towards Grassi Lakes. From here you have your pick of climbs, be warned though the area is a popular, short hike for locals and tourists. Get there early to enjoy some peace and quiet.

You will need to be able to lead climb! I'd suggest picking up a copy of Bow Valley Sport by Derek Galloway, it has thorough information. The climbs here range from 5.7 all the way up to the high 5.12's. Bring a single rope and a standard sport rack.

Definitely bring and use a climbing helmet. Large rocks have been known to fall when a car drives quickly on the road above, keep your eyes open.
