Description

Added by Improvised Journeys

An awesome loop hike around a neighborhood lake with stunning views of Longs Peak, the surrounding foothills, and the Flatirons in the distance.

McIntosh Lake is in northwest Longmont. The 3.3 mile loop extends all the way around the lake, with the first half being on a paved cement trail with neighborhood playgrounds, basketball, volleyball, and a seasonally open restroom. The trail turns to dirt on the western half of the loop, and here is where you will find abundant wildlife such as prairie dog colonies and nesting birds, and often spot bald eagles in the trees bordering surrounding farmland.

The trail is almost completely flat and suitable for all levels of hikers / runners. The dirt section will become covered with ice and snow in winter, yet is still easily passable and only rarely is traction required.

In summer you will see many people fishing, rafting and kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. Sunsets are especially stunning here in all seasons, so bring your camera. Bicycles are permitted on the trail, as are dogs. A pit toilet is available on the far west side of the lake, halfway through the loop.

To reach the lake: From 17th and Hover in Longmont head west on 17th, turn right on Harvard and head north. The lake will be to your left. Abundant free street parking is available by the first playground you see, or in dedicated parking lots by the power plant and at Flanders Park up ahead and to your left.
