Description

Added by Matthew Eaton

This adventure is an easy day trip from the Front Range of Colorado and is about 2 hours northeast of Denver.

The Pawnee Buttes are a major geological feature within Pawnee National Grasslands in the far northeastern part of Colorado. There are two sandstone buttes that each rise over 300ft from the surrounding areas. There are also several other mesas nearby that are worth exploring.

The trail is very straight forward and easily accessed. From the parking lot, you can first view the overlook of the buttes, then backtrack to access the Pawnee Butte Trail which will take you down to the buttes. From the parking lot, it is a 1.5 mile hike to the first butte, so this hike is at least 3 miles round trip, depending on your additional explorations.

Keep your eyes on the lookout for Falcons and Eagles!

Reviews

I think it was more fun seeing all the small towns you pass along the way. The hike was nice, but probably more fun in the summer when the trail isn't as muddy.
