Twin Cones via Second Creek Trailhead is a nice out-and-back trail that can be done year-round. This trail features panoramic views of Winter Park and surrounding areas.
This hike begins at Second Creek Trailhead off of US Highway 40. It's pretty steep right off the bar gaining about 800ft of elevation in the first mile. This first mile takes you to Broome Hut, which has a bathroom and is a great place to stop and take a break. Keep in mind that there are no dogs allowed inside of the hut! If you choose to continue past Broome Hut, you will pass by a small creek and tons of wildflowers as you climb above treeline. If you're lucky, there will still be some nice snowdrifts to sled down on the return trip! The trail will begin to flatten out after about 1.8 miles. Once you get closer to the cones, the trail is harder to follow but it is still easy to see where you are going, as the cones are very distinct and there are cairns along the way. When you reach the top of either cone, you will see views of The Cirque and the Panoramic Lift on the Mary Jane side of Winter Park Ski Resort, as well as some nearby 13ers. (Mt. Flora, Mt. Eva, Parry Peak)
If you choose to do this trail in the summer, make sure you check the weather ahead of time and be prepared to head back down to treeline if you see storms coming in.
