Mountain Bike the Colorado Trail near Mount Elbert

Leadville, Colorado

Description

Added by Whitney James

Distance: 15 miles roundtrip (flexible). Mountain bike a truly "road less taken" for fall colors. Enjoy a quad-burning uphill for a fantastic down. 360˚ views of Twin Lakes, Mt. Elbert, and more.

This is the way to see fall colors if you're into empty trails and endorphins. Grind up the trail starting from South Elbert Trailhead. You'll turn right onto the Colorado Trail at .3 miles and stay here for as long as you like, or 7.3 miles to the Mount Elbert Trailhead. Turn around and go back down to your car. Watch out for Colorado Trail thru-hikers, listen for the elk bugling, and take tons of photos of the aspens.

This trail is best ridden in early to mid September before snow hits! It's technically intermediate and physically strenuous.
