Reviews
Great hike along Independence Pass. We stopped here for lunch and a short hike. If you have a paddle board many people were using theirs here. Be sure to also check out a number of other viewpoints along the pass.

Explore the Devil's Punch Bowl
The Roaring Fork River has several little waterfalls the ends up in a deep swimming hole called The Devil's Punch Bowl. This is a must see if you are driving up to the Independence Pass. I have never seen such blue water before (outside of an amusement park). While Driving from Aspen on CO82 towards Independence Pass there is a small pull off that is not marked on the right side of the road at ...
Camp Difficult Campground, Aspen
This is a great backup campground if all of Maroon Bells campgrounds are full, which in all reality is highly likely. If you're looking to beat the crowds, this is a good number campground to consider. This campground is right off the highway, 5 miles away from the town of Aspen, easy to find, and is surrounded by Aspen groves and thick vegetation. The sites are decent in size and include a tab...
Explore Independence Ghost Town
Back in the late 1800s, Ashcroft, Aspen, and Independence were booming mining town. While Aspen is still thriving today, Ashcroft and Independence are ghost towns. Independence Ghost Town is on Independence Pass, 16 miles east of Aspen on Highway 82.The Farwell Mill sits right along the highway. Independence Pass closes in winter, but the drive is one of the prettiest in Colorado in summer or ...
Hike Grottos Trail
Just nine miles east of Aspen on Highway 82, Independence Pass, are grottos. A grotto is a geological term for a cave or cavern. The Grottos near Aspen were formed by rushing water of the Roaring Fork River. There is only an elevation gain of 300 feet on the three-quarters of a mile loop making it an ultra-family friendly hike. Take a picnic and fishing poles to enjoy even more time along the...
Hike Lost Man Loop
This 8.8 mile "loop" is not a true loop and the trail ends 4 miles apart along Independence Pass, so a car shuttle is recommended. I would recommend starting at the west trailhead (closer to Aspen) but will describe both trailheads so you can set up another car or shuttle at the other one.1) West Trailhead: Drive 14 miles east of Aspen on Highway 82 to the parking lot directly across from Lost ...
Hike or Snowshoe Castle Creek
At the round-a-bout that leads into the town of Aspen, take the Castle Creek Road exit. Follow this road for 12 miles until you get to the ghost town of Ashcroft. The road itself is very scenic, so be prepared to pull over and whip out your camera!During winter, the road ends at Ashcroft and a cross country ski trail replaces it. In my opinion, the snowshoe trail is much better and more intimat...
