Photograph Elk in Moraine Park
Estes Park, Colorado
Description
Added by John Clairmont
This grassy valley is an excellent place to take pictures of elk with a scenic, mountainous background.
The perspective here is vastly different from other areas in Rocky Mountain National Park as Moraine Park is essentially a large, very flat valley surrounded by tall mountains. You'll want to come during the elks' rutting season, which is between mid-September and mid-October. Park at the lot on South Moraine Road, just off of Bear Lake Road. There will be a large gated fence here that is used to keep the elk inside during certain seasons, but there is a latched door you can go through. Follow the path next to the small stream out into the field, where you should see at least a gang or two of elk! Be sure to bring a good lens as you are not allowed to approach the elk, especially during the rut. You can also get some pretty good landscape and sunset pictures here!
