Mylingur, a mountain located on the northern tip of Streymoy within the Faroe Islands, is a hard place to reach and a tricky trail to find, but within a land of so many epic locations, this could go down as one of the best in the Faroe Islands.

Mylingur, a mountain located on the northern tip of Streymoy within the Faroe Islands, is a hard place to reach and a tricky trail to find, but within a land of so many epic locations, this could go down as one of the best in the Faroe Islands.

There are technically two starting points to get to Mylingur since the trail to it breaks off from the popular Saksun/Tjørnuvík hiking trail. That said, the trail head starting in the village of Tjørnuvík is the closest and I’d argue the most scenic as well.

To start, you’ll park your car in the one parking lot of Tjørnuvík. You’ll pass thru the village and towards the trail to Saksun (its sits in the NW part of the village, but if you cant find it just ask any of the 71 people which makes up its population).

The trail will gradually weave up the hill overlooking Tjørnuvík. The 1st half (~2 to 2.5 miles) will stay on the clearly marked Tjørnuvík /Saksun trail. As you reach the top of the hill you’ve just climbed and where it plateaus briefly, you’ll turn west instead of following the main trail to the south.

The rest of the hike is relatively unmarked with no clear trail or cairns. Once you turn west you’ll find a gradual uphill climb for about 1 mile until you come to slight overlook. From there a sketchy traverse down into the grass bowl to the SW of Mylinger mountain awaits you. Note that I couldn’t find any great trail down to this point. I opted for what seemed like the safest path to weave down about midway along the ridge. Note: do not go all the way to the edge at any point. There are 400+ foot drop-offs along the entire coast.

As you reach the bottom, epic views of Mylingur await you. The massive cliffs diving  vertically into the ocean, the hundreds of sea birds and the occasional sheep or two make it a lovely spot to enjoy a lunch or simply soak in the surroundings for an hour or two.

The trail back will look much the same. In total I had the trail at 7.3 miles give or take.

Note: the map in the images of the adventure was the route I took to Mylingur.

This is a great hike, thanks for the description, but this would really benefit with an actual route on the map.
