Snorkel the reef off of Nanuya Balavu Island
Western Division, Fiji
Description
Added by Lacie Griego
Snorkel on a beautiful reef right off of the beach where you can see almost any sea creature imaginable.
Head straight out into the water from the beach. You'll begin to see vibrant blue star fish on the bottom among the rocks. When you start to get farther out you begin to see hundreds of different kinds of fish as well as many different sizes and shapes of coral. We saw an octopus, stingrays, and even a shark.
Watch out for low tide as it can make it very difficult to get in and out of the water. Also, it can be easy to lose track of time and forget to reapply sunscreen resulting in horrible sunburn on your back and legs from being facedown on the water.
To get to the island you have to take a ferry or a seaplane. We took a ferry called the Yasawa flyer to get to the island from Port Denarau in Nadi. The ferry ride took 3 hours one way and only runs each direction once per day so you really need to spend at lease 1 night on the island.
