Hike in Koli National Park - A Unique Piece of Finnish Nature

Lieksa, Finland

Description

Added by Mikael Ahlfors

Looking for a great view of Finnish nature, lakes, trees, fields and lovely paths? This is the place for you. Roughly 5 hours of driving from Helsinki but the scenery won't disappoint you. Clearly marked routes will guide you through 2 circular tracks totaling 61 kilometers.

You can start the track from multiple locations but one of the main starting points is Ukko-Koli peak which is somewhat 350 meters from the sea level. There you can still get a supply of water and buy a map if needed. You start and end at the highest part of the trail giving you fair goodbye and welcoming you back. The trail itself is pretty easy to hike, allowing traveler to gain some speed along the way. The mountain rangers have decided to have some fun with the route as it seems every time you descend from the top you find yourself climbing again to the next hill.

One treat along the path is the ability to utilize free sauna and then jumping into a lake afterwards. Depending on the direction from which you start your journey, this can either be the last or second last day of your trip. Depending on a year there may be fountains which can give you fresh supply of water but carrying purifying tablets is a must if they are contaminated.
