Escape into wild Florida on the River Rapids Nature Trail just minutes from downtown Tampa at Hillsborough River State Park.

After a delayed flight had me spending an unexpected night in the Tampa area, I was pleasantly surprised to roll into Hillsborough River's campground without a reservation and snag a spot to sleep for the night ($24/night plus taxes and fees).

The next morning, well rested, I walked the 1.7-mile Rapids Trail and was drawn into the wild beauty of this park, so close to the city yet vastly different from Tampa's bustling downtown. The park's main attraction is a stretch of Class II rapids on the Hillsborough River - a rare sight in Florida - but don't stop there. Other photo-worthy spots include a wooden suspension bridge and riverside platforms tucked into the trees.

On this quiet morning, I spotted pileated woodpeckers, plenty of squirrels and lizards, and an owl. Arrive early to catch the morning golden hour and have the place to yourself.
