The Gateway to the Camino Frances produces beautiful photographs of the town’s iconic landmarks for visitors and for pilgrims beginning their journey of the Way of St. James.

This beautiful Basque town in Southern Frances sits in the fog shrouded valley of the Pyrenees.  We traveled from Pamplona by taxi, but bus services are also available for about 25 euro. The two hour journey was extended slightly by bouts of car sickness as the driver navigated the mountains’ hairpin roads, which was eventually rewarded by the welcome of charming riverside dining and cobblestone roads to stroll about.   For pilgrims, this launch point for a buen camino provides accommodating lodging, the credential office, and shops to fill your pack with treasures or hiking essentials. The beauty of the town includes Roman style bridges over the Nive River, medieval architecture and the Bishops Prison museum.
