Kitesurf at Beauduc Beach in the Camargue National Park

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France

Description

Added by Friederike Kosche

If you are looking for a laid-back place to kitesurf, chill in the sun and share a gigantic beach with fellow campers, head down to the natural reserve in the Camargue National Park!

The road to Beauduc plage is already an adventure by itself, most of the navigation systems are getting lost. On top of that, cell phone reception is spotty at its best, so make sure to print some directions before hitting the road!

This is a very remote spot on a large beach, the next supermarket is minimum 1h drive away. You want to make that you get all your groceries and necessities taken care of before you hit the road. It requires some planning beforehand, but isn't that part of the fun?

How to get there

The closest major city is Arles. Once you get there, get on the road D570, then turn onto D36 direction Salin de Giraud. Approximately 1km before you actually get there, turn right onto D36c direction Etang de Vaccares.

Now the interesting part starts as you need to stay on D36c for 1.5km. You will have a right hand curve where you turn left. Follow the street and you will it see turn into a dusty road very soon.

From here on it takes ca 30min to the beach. The conditions of the road depend heavily on the last rain, be careful and drive slowly. You will need to pass a very narrow passage. Normal vehicles with max 2m width will fit, just make sure your passengers are checking while you try to squeeze through.

Shortly before you reach the beach there will be a parking lot and you will see another narrow passage on the right side. Once you're on the beach, you can pick your spot - just make sure not to drive into the deep sand if you're not confident that your car can make it out of there again.

You made it!

The biggest hassle of the trip is over. Set up your camp wherever you like on the beach. Please don't camp in the dunes as it's a natural reserve which we should all protect. It can get windy on the beach and in summer mosquitoes can become really aggressive. Make sure you bring protection for the insects and the sun - you're at the beach after all and there is no natural shade to be found.

The area is great for kitesurfers, especially for beginners as it is fairly shallow and there are not many waves. If you are a beginner and you want to learn how to kitesurf, there are a bunch of schools in that area that offer courses. I highly suggest to get some classes with them.

For the rest of the time - go Stand Up Paddling, play Beach Volleyball, do Yoga or just read a book and enjoy the great sunsets!
