About this place

The 33 acre Savannah River Rapids Park showcases a stunning walking trail along Augusta's most popular waterways: the Savannah River and Augusta Canal.

Easily the most popular outdoor attraction in Augusta, the Savannah River Rapids Park marks the beginning of the Augusta Canal. The walkway flanks both the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal, allowing you to see both waterways from the trail. Reed River also flows into the canal producing some beautiful waterfalls adjacent to the canal. Along the walking trail, you will discover beautiful waterfalls, rustic picnic areas, a beautiful wedding pavilion, and the famous Augusta Canal Headgates. As you walk along the headgates, you will notice the hundreds “love locks” that couples have placed along the bridge for years. The trail is a favorite amongst local runners and bikers training for the Augusta Ironman due to its flat surface and the wide dirt paths, making it easy for large groups to run the trail together. The trail itself is a 7.5 miles loop that takes you all the way to Augusta, but most choose to stay at the headgates and watch and listen to the thundering rapids from which the park gets its name. It has become my favorite spot to watch the sunset, or clear my head when I need to get away, but don’t want to travel far. The rapids drowns out any voices and something about how the orange light of the sunset hits the rapids, gives it an unmistakable golden hue as the water crashes to the bottom.
