Description

Added by Eric Sullivan

1 mile hike that includes the remains of a 900 ft. prehistoric rock wall, watchtower, and breathtaking overlook.

Fort Mountain State Park is filled with horse trails, biking trails, walking trails, camping sites, and a lake. Once you arrive at the park you pay a $5 entrance fee and will receive a park map. While visiting I walked the West Overlook Trail and came back down the CCC Tower Trail. This is a 1 mile trail great for anyone of all ages. You start off at 2,650 ft. of elevation and gain 200 ft. of elevation during the trail. The West Overlook trail is 0.5 miles long that takes you straight to the overlook. There is a spacious deck to look out over Georgia. I especially recommend this hike during the fall when the leaves start to change colors. Once you are finished at the overlook you will go up some metal stairs that will lead you to the watchtower. The watchtower was closed at the time I was visiting but they do allow you to go inside of it. The watchtower is the start of the CCC Stone Tower trail that will bring you back to the parking lot. Along this trail you will drop 200 ft. of elevation going down a few stone stairs. On your way down you will pass by some of the ruins of a prehistoric rock wall along with a sign giving you some information about the wall. The trail back to the parking lot is also 0.5 miles long.

Hike the West Overlook Trail and CCC Stone Tower Trail Loop Reviews

Take tower trail up and descend the overlook trail, really enjoyed even after doing many other trails . Tower red trail is lots of fun steps

This is a great short trail with a magnificent sunset view that goes as far as the eye can see. The stone tower and stone wall are both very interesting as well. If you are interested in archaeology, the stone wall is a must-see, as its origins are still a mystery. Bring the family!

Myself, my two kids and our dog hiked this trail. For someone like me who is out of shape my golden retriever kept me at a vigorous pace so it was a tough climb to the tower. The kids didn't mind and enjoyed the stone steps and the tower was very cool to them. The over looks were amazing!
