Try this lovely, lightly trafficked trail on its own and enjoy a serene picnic under a waterfall; or, pair it up with the Johns Mountain Loop for some extra miles and more breathtaking views!

Keown Falls Trail is a moderate loop perfect for a Spring day (especially after those April showers).  The trailhead is located in the Keown Falls picnic area which is very spacious spotted with several picnic tables. This would be a great place for a family gathering and is spacious enough that the next family would not be within earshot.  The trail starts out as a fairly flat trek through fallen trees, brush, wildflowers. A nearby calm creek provides a soothing soundtrack as you begin the trail. Eventually, you will cross this creek (very easy crossing) and after this crossing, the ascent begins. The better part of this hike is a steady incline of switchbacks as you trek to the falls which is also the beginning of Johns Mountain loop.  If you have a longer day, I recommend coupling this hike with the Johns Mountain loop for an approximate 5 mile round trip adventure.

The views get better and better the higher you get on the trail. Eventually, you break the tree line and can see treetops for miles. The trail continues on a narrow cliffside to meet the bottom of a stone staircase which leads to the falls. Be sure of your footing on these stairs as they can be a little tricky to navigate (especially for a younger adventurer). Once you reach the plateau of the stairs, the falls are to the left with the Johns Mountain loop sign to the right.  The area under the waterfall is perfect for picnicking or relaxing before the trek back down the mountain.

Exit the waterfall area in the opposite direction that you entered and start the descent. Along the way, you will wind through forest spotted with mossy rocks and trickling creeks. It's truly magical.
