If you liked Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel Frankenstein, or simply have a fascination for castles this is one majestic hike. The 750 year old castle is located in the Odenwald mountains overlooking Darmstadt, Germany.

The hike begins at Darmstadt-Eberstadt Frankenbergers Mühle bus stop. There are no parking lots near by so I suggest using public transportation. Download the app RMV or simply go online to find directions from your current location. This application has been a life saver while using public transportation in Hesse, Germany. Otherwise you can drive to the castle directly if you want skip the hike.

There will be steps right around the bend near the bus stop. The steps are not well kept so be careful on the way up, it's a quick elevation gain. After a long series of steps the trail will open up into the forest and you'll be able to enjoy the tall creepy trees conquering the land. There are certain landmarks you'll see along the way in the pictures above. The best part of this hike was the fear of getting lost on the way to Frankenstein's Castle, my group had a bit of panic on the way up because most of the trails are not too obvious. We used what looked like a metal mega phone to call out to our friends who fell behind. Once you hit this spot it's all uphill from there and you're nearly there! It took about an hour and a half to reach the top.

Be sure to explore all around the castle once you reach the top. Sadly most of the castle is in ruins but you can still feel the history. Climb to the highest tower, and walk into the small chapel. After appreciating the castle you can stop in at the Burg Frankenstein Restaurant for a coffee or meal. On our way back we took the same path home.

Note: my exchange group and I traveled in mid March when the trees were still bare and creepy. I would suggest post Winter and Fall to get the best out of the experience. Especially because on Halloween you best believe Frankenstein's Castle is packed. Check out their Halloween events

Hike to Frankenstein's Castle Reviews

Went with my wife and some friends and really enjoyed being able to look at the castle and walk around the paths that surrounded the castle. Only downfall which I believe was only because of the timing of our visit, some areas of the castle was not accessible because they were tearing down some things from a Halloween event. Great place for hiking, walking, and mountain biking. Plus free parking right outside the castle and great beer.
