Photograph Europe's only wild monkey population, on Gibraltar's Upper Rock Nature Preserve.
There's only one place you can find wild monkeys in Europe: The Rock of Gibraltar. Formally called Barbary Apes or Barbary Macaques, these monkeys are plentiful across the entire Upper Rock Nature Reserve and familiar enough with visitors that a careful photographer can up close.
Getting to the Upper Rock requires either a steep hike, or a ride on a cable car, but once you get there, the views are unmatched and the monkeys are easy to spot.
To get some great shots, make sure you approach the monkeys slowly and carefully, taking note of any aggressive or unsettled behavior. Most are accustomed to tourist, but the are still very much wild monkeys. If you step away from the crowds and venture a bit further onto the footpaths leading down the mountain, you'll likely find a better shot, and calmer monkeys.
Make sure to keep all your snacks and valuables tucked away as some of the monkeys are crafty thieves! And, take note that it is illegal according to the laws of Gibraltar to feed the monkeys.
