Explore the town of Kythera (Chora)

Χώρα, Greece

Description

Walk around a picturesque little town and a venetian castle

Just like most islands in the Aegean sea, the capital of the island has the same name as the island and is usually referred to as Chora (Χώρα). Chora in Kythera is located in the south upon a hill overlooking the surround areas. It is one of the most picturesque landscapes that you may encounter in Greece. The village/small town became the capital of the island during the venetian occupation of the island and during the same period the castle of the town was built.

The architecture of the town is mostly aegean sea -like but the influence of the venetian and english occupation of the island are profound. As a result, many of the old mansions and houses retain forms typically found in those kind of architectures and the result is an interesting mix that creates a rather unique settlement. Walking around the alleys of the town is amazing and it is really great that although the place is of such beauty, there are no hords of tourists around. As a result, there is a sense of calmness and joy, spoiled only by the sounds and screams of the children that are playing around.

Taking the main alley, you may also find most of the shops, cafes and restaurants (don't expect to find many of them - just a few but everyone is unique). At the end of this alley, you may follow the signs that take you to the castle. Getting there the view is amazing towards the sea and the village of Kapsali that serves as the port near the town of Kythera. The castle is open till 7pm or 8pm so you can't enter during the night. Being there during the sunset is wonderful though.

Apparently, in the small alleys of the town there are no cars, so you need to leave your car at the (free) municipal parking that I have marked on the map.
