A paved, scenic drive that weaves through the Hawaiian jungle with views of the Pacific- great for running or cycling if you want a workout!

Running or biking on Old Mamalahoa Hwy is a treasure! The path is marked as a 'Scenic Drive' but you can park your car along the way and run, or bike through. This area is north of Hilo's downtown so you'll follow Mamalahoa Hwy north (the only highway that goes around the north side of the island) until you see a blue sign pointing east for a scenic drive. This will bring you to the start of the trail.

Along the way, you'll be surrounded by trees and flora. If you continue through, you'll come to an overlook that looks down to the ocean with more land on the other side. You can actually walk down to the ocean here (and I would recommend that you do!). It is on this side path that you could also enter the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden for a cost, but this is not necessary as you can enjoy the area without paying.

If you continue along Old Mamalahoa Hwy, you'll eventually find yourself passing a cafe where they sell smoothies, bagels, and other snacks. The fruit is very fresh so I'd recommend stopping for a refresher to support local business!

For bikers, after about 2 miles in you can make a left on Old Onomea Rd, which will bring you back to Mamalahoa Hwy. Another option, is you can continue on Old Mamalahoa Hwy (by veering right), which will eventually bring you to the small town of Pepeekeo, just further up north the Mamalahoa Hwy.
