Some things in the Nepalese Way

  • 'Namaste' is the way of greeting everyone. Some Places might have their own way of saying but it is always accompanied by a slight bow and joined hands.
  • While entering the temple/shrines it is common to leave the shoes outside as a respect to the deities.
  • Photography might be prohibited in some temples or heritage sites. Ask some locals or guides before taking them.
  • Tipping in Nepal is not compulsory. If you feel like it, tip otherwise the tipping culture is not common.
  • Bargaining is the way to go while shopping in Nepal. Especially in the touristy areas don't hesitate to bargain. However, to support the local economy do it less often in the rural villages of the Himalayas.
  • Dal Bhat is the basic Nepalese Staple which goes with several other dishes. Sharing food from the same plate might be rude in some places as well.
  • Keep public display of affection to a minimum. Nepal, in the rural regions, is still conservative to some extent.
  • 'Dhanyabad' is the term for thank you. You can use it to show your appreciation.

    • You can get most of the items and gears in Nepal. Don't pay more for something you can rent here.
    • Be social and try trekking in groups rather than alone. Also, follow your itinerary once finalized.
