Dive the "El Aguila" Shipwreck

Sandy Bay, Honduras

Description

Added by Josiah Roe

A 230' long shipwreck with all manner of rooms to explore that was broken into three pieces by Hurricane Mitch and now filled with marine life.

The "El Aguila", meaning "The Eagle" in Spanish, is one of the three primary shipwreck dives off the coast of Roatan and the most accessible, being only a couple hundred yards off the coast at a depth of 110' feet in the heart of the Meso-American reef system.

Purchased and sunk by Anthony's Key Resort though accessible and usably by anyone, the El Aguila is 230' long and was broken into three pieces in 1998 by Hurricane Mitch. It has numerous swim-throughs, rooms, and hallways for divers to explore and is an excellent intro to wreck-diving on Roatan.

On your ascent along the mast on the bow of the ship notice the water bubbles trapped in the small platform that extends out, creating a mirror you can look into if you turn onto your back and look up.

An advanced certification and experience with overhead diving is recommended as is going with an experienced dive guide such as Pro Dive Roatan, which is required by the Roatan Marine Park.

The principles of Leave No Trace apply to the ocean as well as the land. Do not touch the coral and the wildlife and take no souvenirs.

Plan your dive. Dive your plan.
