This breathtaking hike takes travelers deep into the incredible geography of southern Iceland. You will feel like you're on another planet passing gorgeous rivers, waterfalls, and hiking alongside herds of wild sheep.
Trail head is located at the first waterfall: Skógafoss, Skógar, Iceland. This waterfall is a popular stop for tour buses and campers, and here is a parking lot and campsites available. An initial set of stairs shown in first image takes you to the beginning of the hike inland, where most people stopping to visit do not continue past. The trail is 25km long with the option to stay at the Fimmvörðuháls hut before finishing the 50km round trip, or opt to make it a day trip and turn around sooner. The trail is well marked and stakes show your distance traveled every 100m. No difficult scramble sections throughout the hike, however proper hiking shoes/boots are recommended due to rough, volcanic terrain and several creek crossings along the way. Iceland is known to be very rainy and windy, so be prepared for the changing and oftentimes intense climate. On this hike you will enjoy a series of breathtaking waterfalls and stunning mountain views the entire way. It is not a very busy trail past the 1 km mark, so oftentimes it will feel like just you and the sheep immersed in Icelandic geography. Enjoy!
