Explore Viti Crater
Viti Trail, Iceland, Iceland
Description
Added by Chaniel Nelson
Explore amazing Icelandic landscape on this short, easy to access hike. Duration: around the rim, 1 hour; around the rim and down to the water, 2 hours.
Viti is a large crater, located near lake Myvatn in Northern Iceland. It is filled with bright blue water that changes into a different shade of blue at every perspective. Viti is surrounded by lava fields and a very colorful geothermal area, reminding you how incredible Iceland's landscape is. I visited in June.
The trailhead starts at the parking lot, and can't be missed. You have the option of going either way - it is a rim hike. The hike around the crater can be done in about an hour, but I highly recommend venturing around the rim, and down to the water. We had the crater to ourselves once we made it to the bottom; people looked like ants, and the views were surreal.
For beginners: the right side of the trail is much easier, and I advise you to not trek to the bottom as it is slippery and steep on the way down, as well as difficult to climb back up (although there is no equipment needed). To give you an idea of the depth of the crater, spot the tiny people across the rim, or my bright blue jacket in the second photo.
Getting there: From Myvatn, a major destination in Northern Iceland, drive East on Road 1 (Ring Road) for approximately 3.5 miles. Turn left towards Viti/Krafla, and you will spot a power plant (unexpected). Drive past the plant, and continue on the road until the road ends. The parking area will be on the right. It is relatively small, so go early to avoid any crowds. GPS points: N65° 43' 2.750" W16° 45' 13.668"

Cool spot! Didn't really know what to expect in terms of hiking or getting to the crater. Once you park the car, you are already at the rim. Worth checking out and walking around the rim. Please do be careful with where you walk. There are roped off areas that you shouldn't cross. The land is delicate and the least we can do is protect it. Get some great expansive views for very little effort.

I was surprised at how big this crater was! There's a small crater (or geothermal springs?) off to the side as well that is even more colorful
