Kirkjufell is one of the iconic locations of Iceland, in fact, you've probably seen photos of it travel ads and it's one of the reasons you wanted to visit Iceland!

Only 2.5 hours from Reykjavík in good weather, Kirkjufell is a popular spot for Iceland photography. Situated on the northern half of Snæfellsnes peninsula, the falls and mountain work as a sunrise, sunset, or northern lights location. Due to its popularity a large gravel parking area has been developed near the falls as well as established trails. You'll likely encounter other tourists and photographers here, even when the weather is bad.

To reach the falls from the parking area follow the trail for less than 1000 ft (300m) to the top of the second falls. Spots for photographing the waterfalls and mountain can found along the cliffs and base of the falls. Be careful of eroding areas and if the water is frozen do not walk on it near the falls, I've watched people fall in. If it's a calm day a beautiful reflection of the mountain can be found in the surrounding outlet.

The nearby town of Grundarfjörður has limited lodging and groceries, and is also a safe heaven in extremely nasty weather; always a possibility in Iceland!

What a backdrop for pictures! Beautiful iconic mountain, on the north side of the island, just as the peninsula begins. There is a parking lot literally off the ring road. It is a bit of a trek from the parking lot, but well worth it. Beautiful views of the mountain, from every angle, in the background.

This area is kind of classic due to this picture that has been featured many places across marketing and social media. The walk is easy and you will likely be there with many other tourists. If you really want some fun climb the mountain after you take your photo!

This was, without a doubt my favourite spot in Iceland. The mountain with the waterfalls in the foreground is a photographers dream, and it's so easy to reach.

Noone can deny that the scenery is amazing and indeed the mountain is very photogenic. However, it is often the first stop from Reykjavik so you really dont know what is coming next! :) I personally found the overall surrounding landscape equally impressive, to the point I ended up taking more photos from the waterfalls and the mountains behind them than Kirkjufell.

This is a great first stop on an Iceland trip, but what the photos don't show is the metal bridge which crosses right out of the frame on top of the waterfall. Fun to stand on, but not super photogenic. Kirkjufellfoss is beautiful but Icleand has so much more to offer! Consider hiking the Laugavegeur trail or at least spending a day at Thorsmork (spelled with an Icelandic D instead of "th").

This view is truly stunning, and really presents a lot of what Iceland is about in a nutshell. Plummeting falls and the unique shape of Kirkjufell can make for an incredibly framed shot. In the right light, your pictures can really come to life here. Iceland is not particularly known for great weather, so if you want to give yourself a good chance at capturing something special, give yourself at least both ends of a day or ideally multiple days. Checking weather forecasts can help too. This whole peninsula is awesome, so be sure to check out Snæfellsjökull National Park as well.
