Photograph the Northern Lights at Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss
Snæfellsnesvegur, Iceland
Description
Added by Talia Touboul
Capture beautiful night views of the waterfall (Kirkjufellsfoss) and mountain (Kirkjufell) with the northern lights.
Kirkjufell is a freestanding symmetric mountain, and is the most photographed mountain in Iceland. It is located in West Iceland on the north coast of Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is 463m high, and attracts tourists at all time of the year.
During the winter evenings, photographers and tourists gather pretty early. This is a spot where you are first come first served. I would recommend arriving pretty early on nights where the aurora forecasts are high. You can park at the little kirkjufellsfoss parking lot and walk a few hundred yards to the waterfall. During the winter months, the snow is usually compacted to ice, to watch your step, although there is a path that leads you directly there.
You can spend the night in Grundarfjörður, the town located right next to the mountain. The Aurora is unpredictable, so bring warm clothes and something to drink. You never know who long you’ll be there. In this particular area on any given nights, if the sky is clear, the lights will appear at any time between 7pm and 6am.

Photograph the Northern Lights at Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss Reviews
It's an icon so you're not likely going to be here alone. The weather coming off the ocean can get pretty nasty so if you're staying in a camper van I recommend finding somewhere sheltered in town when not shooting.
