Whale Watching at Dalvik
Dalvík, Iceland

A rather close encounter with humpback whales
Usually I am not very fond of such type of activities as they end up frustrating the animals and disrupting the habitat. However, whale watching in this part of Iceland actually saved the whales as it has almost stopped the whale hunting that significantly reduced their population (the profits from tourism outweighed the profits from hunting).
Dalvik is a village close to Akureyri, the second biggest city in Iceland after Reykjavic. It is probably the best place for whale watching in Iceland. You will embark on a previously whale hunting vessel and explore the area inside the Eyjafjordur fjord, very close to the Arctic cycle.
The encounter with the whales is almost out of this world. The size of these animals, their moves on the water and even more impressively their jumps and plays are a miracle to watch.
The sea in the fjord is also full of other fish and in the tour that we had, we were given poles to fish and actually caught a cod. All the fish that we caught were grilled and offered to us to taste! Excellent!
