Bodyboard session in Icelandic frigid water

Thorlakshofn, Iceland

Description

Added by Wesetthesails

Bodyboarding in near-freezing waters close to the Arctic circle

Getting there: After a couple hours of driving on the Road 1 to the East from Reykjavik, drive into the city of Þorlákshöfn to find the surf spot next by the harbor.

This surf spot is a regional classic. It can be surfed all year round. Wind from South West/West combined with a South swell direction give the best chance to surf there.

As the bottom is essentially boulders and waves are powerful, it is not really suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. Good surf skills are needed. Note that the access to the water is tricky because you have to go through slippery rocks.

A good wetsuit is crucial in Iceland. The water temperature early November is around 7°C. It is not the lowest but added to the cold air temperature, it can be challenging to surf. A 5/4 mm hooded full wetsuit at least is required along thick gloves and boots.

You can meet a small community of surfers there who are really friendly!
